Thoughts about Jiu-Jitsu and the Universe

West Side is beginning to take on a life of its own. It doesn’t seem to be about me at all, which is awesome; there seem to be so many people vested in the success of the school that it has taken on a life of its own. It’s kind of like Frankenstein’s monster, in the beginning, slapped together with all kinds of different inanimate parts and never really coming to life until there was a spark. The spark at West Side is coming from her students, people that are proud to train there and that makes me happier than words can express.

Wherever you train, you must realize that you are a part of your school’s success. Your teacher maybe the one who runs the school, but its soul comes from its students. That goes for any organization you belong to; the people who make up the group are the ones who will bring life to it. I just want to thank my students, my instructors, my friends for bringing West Side to life.

That’s awesome Mark! Congratulations on the success of the school!

It’s unfortunate that the recent Pres. Obama quote has been so misused and taken out of its context, but I think it really does sum up how businesses work…”If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

That somebody in my opinion, that the quote refers to, is the person that gives their blood, sweat and tears to the mat at West Side every class; the somebody that lays the foundation for the delicate environment of uniqueness and equality that can only be found on that mat.

Even though, or maybe because, your name does not appear over the doors of the establishment in bold capitalized letters, your character and integrity allows for something far greater to be. A place where all are welcome.
