Thoughts about Jiu-Jitsu and the Universe

This September I will be testing for my black belt. Man, it seems like I just started jiu-jitsu and now I’ll be testing for black. The path continues despite the mile stone, despite the completion of the goal. I guess the ultimate goal will never be met and that is to be as technical as possible and to understand the underpinnings of the art, to comprehend the underlying principles of jiu-jitsu and in understanding those things, ultimately understanding everything.

I know that’s pretty much impossible (to understand everything, but it’s something to work towards). I guess understanding the self through the practice of jiu-jitsu is a good place to start.

That’s awesome Mark! Jiu-Jitsu in my opinion, like life, is what ever you make of it. If you want the black belt to be the completion of a journey or simply another door leading to the next path, it will be what you need it to be. There are many that are content with an ordinary life, but I think that once you witness Jiu-Jitsu, there isn’t much chance of that anymore.

Jiu Jitsu is much like learning language. We begin by learning individual separate sounds to form words. White – we are making sounds and babbling a bit and maybe get to say a word. Blue – we can be comprehended and maybe even put a word or two together. Purple – vocabulary is growing, string words together, almost creating sentences. Brown – proficient in linking words, putting sentences together, and starting to put it all in conversation. Black – Proficient in the language, time to learn a new language, and thus the journey begins anew.
