Thoughts about Jiu-Jitsu and the Universe

Once again life’s crazy and as a result the blog is taking a hit, my apologies. I use this blog as a way to get my thinking together. It’s a chance to also solidify the hodge-podge of thought that exists in my brain. Last week, Professor Sauer gave a seminar in Park City; I couldn’t stay for too long because we had a practice kids’ tournament at a cross-town friend’s gym back in Ogden. I was lucky enough to hear Professors Sauer’s analogy about eating hot soup and how your jiu-jitsu should be like taking sips from the edge instead of plowing into the middle and burning your mouth. Anyway, it gave me a great idea. I think it would be really cool to collect all the great analogies our instructors and teachers use to explain jiu-jitsu.

One of the most used analogies for jiu-jitsu as a whole is the comparison to the game of chess. I also like the “Jedi Mind Trick” analogy when you pull your opponent’s leg because you want him to move it away from you, when you want them to do the opposite of what you’re doing we use the Jedi Mind Trick. Anyway, I thought that would be something for the third book, the title would be Sipping Soup and other Jiu-Jitsu Analogies. I guess I dream a lot, but I think it would be pretty cool.

“Better to be a dog alive than a lion dead.” Master Sauer.

I recently realized, after 15 years training and hearing him say this, that this is a bible quote that has been slightly altered. The time it took me to figure that out pretty much sums up my learning processes.

    Ecclesiastes 9:4

“For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.” King James Bible
