Much love to the Gracies, but I have to disagree: what about non-Gracie jiu-jitsu? What about Luis Franca, who also learned directly from Maeda and incorporated catch wrestling from Europe, who taught Oswaldo Fadda and through their non-Gracie lineage, brought about Rodolfo Vieira, arguably the best jiu-jitsu practitioner out there right now? (here’s Vieira’s lineage, if it matters: Mitsuyo Maeda > Luis Franca > Oswaldo Fadda > Monir Salomão > Julio Cesar Pereira > Rodolfo Vieira). I love the Gracies, but they can’t say they invented jiu-jitsu.

Wow, thanks for the history lesson. I had no idea. Very interesting stuff. Just goes to show that for one story there are a hundred different ones. Thanks for the response Keith. One Love.

No worries! I found out because of dstryrsg.com, another site that I frequent. Someone made a good point over there, too – why isn’t Luis Franca post-humously honored with a 10th degree red belt, since he’s also a creator of jiu-jitsu (like Helio Gracie, for instance). Just food for thought.
