thoughts from a jiu-jitsu company

My students are getting good, and I know it has very little to do with me. I’m not trying to be humble; I’m simply stating a fact. I rolled with some guys tonight and man, they’re definitely improving, and although I’m proud to be a part of their progress, I realize I am just a small piece.

My students have other instructors as well as each other that they learn from, they buy DVDs, they go to other gyms, they practice on their own and on grappling dummies, they read jiu-jitsu books and articles, they write jiu-jitsu blogs, they enter tournaments, they come to class, they’re as technical as they can be.

There are multiple factors in the progress of my students. When it comes right down to it they are ultimately responsible for their improvement. They are getting good because they are making themselves good, by teaching each other, by studying, and by practicing, and I’m very proud of them.
