VIMBY – Bilenky Junk Yard Race

What the hell does this video have to do with jiu-jitsu? Well, it’s more about starting a culture than it is about BJJ. It’s about getting people together who are passionate about something and celebrating it–in this case it’s drinking beer and racing your bike through a junk yard–I think it’s awesome.

The guys in this video live bikes; you can tell. Who the hell would get up on a cold day to ride their bike through a frozen junk yard? I know I wouldn’t, but that’s only because that’s not my culture, I’m not into bikes like that. But if someone said, “Hey Mark, they’ve thrown some mats down in the woods and everyone is going out there to train,” I’d probably go. I’d think it was weird, but I’d go.

The guys in this video are creating a culture where they live. They have a hardcore group of bike riders. I think jiu-jitsu culture can exist also–we just need a hardcore group that’s willing to grapple in a junk yard on a cold winter’s morning.

Not trying to hijack your thread, but anybody that’s been to my blog has seen the “Caveman” training. Me, Mace, Miles, and a couple other guys (Dragon Eagles) get together every Friday afternoon and throw tractor tires around a parking lot.

My wife cannot fathom why we do this. “You can just go to Gold’s; why mess around with sledgehammers, dirty tractor tires, and huge chains in 90 degree weather when you can work out in a clean, air conditioned gym??”

She doesn’t understand the culture. Good post man.
