Jiu-Jitsu and CPAs
CPAs (certified public accountants) are very interesting people. They can see through emotion and talk to you about numbers. They give you rates of success based on mathematical equations. It’s magical in its simplicity.
I met with a CPA yesterday—friendly guy, young and successful. Although I know many ways to choke people unconscious, I don’t know a lot about finance. I’m all for self-education, but sometimes you need an expert. I went to talk about my jiu-jitsu schools and how to make them better. First thing that came up–student tuition. “You’re not charging enough,” He said.
He ran some numbers and viola, “If you want to pay all your school’s bills and have capital to grow, you must charge this much…” Done. That’s it, the magic number right in front of my face. There is no arguing, or “yeah, buts,” if you want success, this is the number.
This week in my jiu-jitsu schools I will be letting my students know that magic number. Some won’t like it, some will be okay with it and understand, some will quit, but the bottom line is the bottom line. CPAs deal with cold equations, and bottom lines, and magic numbers, and now it’s time for me to deal with them also.
Dammit!
