One of the tenets of jiu-jitsu is to tire a stronger opponent out before you attempt a submission. A tired person usually will make mistakes allowing you to capitalize and finish him with a good technique; it’s called “cooking” your opponent. You “cook” them and when they’re ready, you “eat” them. Here’s [...]

The Dip and Jiu-Jitsu
Filed Under Uncategorized | 1 Comment
The Dip by Seth Godin is a pretty good book. It’s about quitting and I guess it’s about not quitting. It’s very interesting, and insightful. There is a metaphor that Godin uses that is perfect for jiu-jitsu, and it is also the name of the book—The Dip.
In jiu-jitsu when you first start, [...]

Yesterday was my 100th post on this blog. What does that mean? Nothing really—a benchmark I guess. It’s something to measure progress. It’s like lasting two minutes with a guy that used to tap you in 30 seconds—it’s a measure of how far you’ve come. It’s also a reminder of [...]

MMA: Its Own Martial Art
Filed Under Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
MMA has become its own style of martial art. In the early days of MMA you had different styles of martial arts competing against each other (i.e. karate vs. boxing). Then you had (and still have today at some schools) the conglomeration of styles taught separately and then put together in the ring [...]

This is one of my favorite photo essays of West Side and of a guy that I admire and wish the best of luck to in his move back to Hawaii.
Jason is a great person and I admired his work ethic and spirit. Good Luck bra.

Jiu-Jitsu and CPAs

CPAs (certified public accountants) are very interesting people. They can see through emotion and talk to you about numbers. They give you rates of success based on mathematical equations. It’s magical in its simplicity.
I met with a CPA yesterday—friendly guy, young and successful. Although I know many ways to choke people [...]

The Art of Jiu-Jitsu
Filed Under Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Theory, Philosophy, and Technique | Leave a Comment
Jiu-jitsu is art. It’s the kind of art that goes unappreciated by most, much like tattoos or graffiti. I get very excited when I watch someone pull off an amazing move in a tournament or a MMA fight. I usually stand up and shout, “Did you see that? Ah, shit that [...]

It amazes me how jiu-jitsu lessons are life’s lessons. The move to a bigger facility in Logan for my jiu-jitsu school is going bad fast. There are just some things that can’t be resolved, so it’s time to move on. That’s a lesson learned from jiu-jitsu—the moving on part—looking for other opportunities.
When [...]

Thank God for the Gracies

Juan Pablo Garcia Molina posted this on Facebook yesterday and I’ve watched it at least ten times. I think things like this are still taught to people and it is scary and ridiculous. Brazilian jiu-jitsu to me is a beautiful art, much like a lot of other martial arts, but what these guys [...]

Fight Club, Honesty, and Ego
Filed Under Uncategorized | 4 Comments
Fight Club was a good movie. I liked it because it was about more than fighting. One of my favorite scenes in the movie was when Edward Norton (or was it Brad Pit?) told the Fight Club members to pick a fight with a stranger and lose on purpose—great scene. That would [...]
