Mourning

I’ve been thinking about something I read. I don’t remember where I read it or when I read it, but it was about the amount of time one should lament or mourn a death. The answer—four days.

Four days—that’s all you get?

After four days you need to get on with your life. That’s tough. That’s a little too structured for me. I’ll be sad until I’m not sad anymore; it’s as simple as that. I’ll choose my own way to mourn, and sitting around crying doesn’t work for me (it works for a lot of people and it helps them, but for me it doesn’t help). I need to do something.

The first thing I’m going to do is to start the Chris Kisner Jiu-Jitsu Scholarship at West Side Jiu-Jitsu Academy. It will allow one high school student the opportunity to train at West Side for one year for free. After that year, they can apply for the chance to get the scholarship for another year until they graduate from high school.

The second thing I would like to do is get Chris’s name on one of the corner pads of the MMA cage at West Side. Jarrett Kelton, who owns the cage, has been looking for sponsors to help pay for the padding that it needs. For $250 a company can get their name and logo on one of the corner pads. I want to raise that money and put Chris’s name on one of those corner pads, something like “We Love you Chris Kisner” or “West Side’s Chris Kisner” with the dates of his birth and death underneath. This cage will eventually be used in sanctioned MMA events and if I were fighting, it would make me feel good to know Chris was in my corner; that he was in the cage with me.

To make this happen I need to raise $250 (I think Jarrett would just give us the corner pad, but I wouldn’t feel right about that). I’m looking for donations; I’ll start myself with donating $50. If you’re reading this blog cut and paste it into an email and send it to anyone that you think would like to donate. If you would like to donate call me (801.920.6500) or come by the school.

I don’t know how other people deal with death, but in this case setting up a Chris Kisner Scholarship and getting his name in the cage will make me feel better.
